This practice is being offered in collaboration with The Portland Jewish Yoga Collective. Tu B’Shvat is a Jewish holiday best known as the new year of the trees or the “Jewish Earth Day.” But at the heart of this holiday is the important Jewish value of tikkun olam, or repairing the world. Through active movement and steady restorative practice we will celebrate the practice of tikkun olam by both taking action and turning inward. Please wear clothes that help you feel comfortable breathing deeply and moving freely.

During this two-hour practice we will honor all of the ways that we can become forces for positive transformation and revolutionary growth, for dismantling oppressive systems and living in ways that create space for all beings to find peace, justice, and freedom from suffering. As the late yoga teacher Michael Stone describes, we need a “yoga for our time,” each evolution of this holiday reflects a pressing and timely need for tikkun olam.

The Portland Jewish Yoga Collective was established in 2018 by yoga teacher Rachel Stern, in collaboration with TischPDX, as a place for Jewish people of all affiliations to connect through the practice of yoga. Yoga and Judaism are both lenses through which we can not only see the world, but which provide a deeper embodiment of being alive. Yoga Bhoga teacher Blair Borax and Rachel Stern have joined together to create this workshops for anyone who desires to have a connection to a Jewish experience through yoga.
