So you arrive for your yoga class and your teacher starts singing in Sanskrit. You wonder what it means. Should you sing along? How do you learn the words? At Yoga Bhoga, some of our teachers chant the classic mantra of togetherness called Saha Navavatu. Traditionally it is chanted at the beginning of study by teacher and student. The intention is for all of us to learn from one another and to live in peace as we study. Below is the mantra in Sanskrit and a translation. Give it a try next time!
Saha navavatu Saha nau bhunaktu Saha viryam karavavahai Tejasvi navadhitamastu Ma vidvisavahai Om shanti, shanti, shanti
May we be protected both together May we be nourished both together May we energetically radiate truth and the light of life Through our shared study Never shall we denounce anyone Never shall we entertain negativity, destroying our togetherness Peace, Peace, Peace
